Mazda MX-5 Miata History - Gossett Mazda - Memphis, TN
The Mazda MX-5 Miata debuted at the 1989 Chicago auto show. Over the last 30 years, it has managed to pass the test of time and keep its style, while still advancing itself with the changing times.

The NA Generation

The original Miata debuted with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that produced just 116 horsepower and 110 lb-ft of torque, and a manual five-speed transmission. This very first version of the car had a top speed of 116 miles per hour which doesn't seem fast today, but was plenty quick for the time.

The first Miata was simple but offered options that included an optional removable hardtop. The first major update came in 1994 when Mazda put a 1.8-liter engine under the hood. The final update of the NA Miata came when it added a new engine control unit that produced 133 horsepower, and an added rear subframe lateral brace bar.

The NB Generation

The NB generation came in 1999 with a new Miata that ditched the iconic pop-up headlights of its predecessor. It was also slightly larger and came with a slight bump in horsepower. Another update came in 2001, and saw the Miata get a revised front fascia. The best bump in horsepower at this time came in 2004, when Mazda launched the turbocharged Mazdaspeed version, and increased the horsepower all the way to 178 hp.

The NC Generation

The Miata name was dropped in 2006 with the arrival of the NC generation. The new car was called the MX-5. It was bigger and heavier and came with a power-retractable hardtop.
In 2009 the MX-5 got a facelift, giving it a grille reminiscent of the smiley-face Mazda3. After the addition of standard stability control in 2012, the Miata stayed largely unchanged until 2016.

The ND Generation

In 2016 the MX-5 got a clean-sheet redesign taking the car back to its roots. The ND's 2.0-liter engine offers less power than its predecessor but, thanks to having shed a good chunk of weight, is actually faster and better balanced. With up to date technology and a modern look, the present day MX-5 is the best yet, and has more in store for the future.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is the best-selling roadster of all time. Test drive it today at Gossett Mazda and you'll quickly understand why.
